Physical and chemical properties
1) Dissolubility: It almost does not dissolve in ethanol, ethyl ether, chloroform. It can form clear and suspended viscous solution in the mixture of water and glacial acetic acid or the mixture of ethanol and chloroform (1 : 1). It swells quickly in the hot water of 80-90°C and dissolves quickly when the temperature drops. Its aqueous solution is quite stable at normal temperature. MC gel formed by high temperature can display reversible change from gel to solution in turn by heating and cooling. It has good humectant and dispersing, binding, thickening, emulsifying, water retention and film forming properties. MC film has excellent toughness, flexibility and clearance. Because of its non-ionic it can be compatible with other emulsifiers but easy to salt out, and show stable in the range of PH 2-12.

Dissolving Methods
A. Product with surface treatment(s) can be added in tap water directly and can disperse quickly throughagitating. The solution pH value can be adjusted to the range of 8-9 by adding in alkali in form of ammonia and Na2CO3. By agitating the solution viscosity can be increased.
B. Product without surface treatment can swell and disperse in hot water with temperature higher than 85ºC. Usually it is dissolved by the following methods. Take about 1/5~1/3 of the needed hot water and agitate so that the added product will swell completely. Then add in the remained water, which can be hot or cold, agitate to the appropriate temperature and the product can dissolve completely. As to dissolve MC by hot water method, it is very important to cool the mixture down. To dissolve the product completely and form ideal transparent solution, the temperature is dependant upon the type of MC.
C. Dispersing by dry mixing, i.e., the product can be mixed with other powder substance homogeneously first, and then tap water is added in, so that the product will dissolve quickly without any gel.
D. Wetting with organic solvent. Disperse the product in organic solvent first or wet the product by organic solvent and then add the mixture into hot water or add in hot water, which could also dissolve the product efficiently. The organic solvent could be ethanol or ethandiol.
E. Introducing in product directly during manufacture. Fist add tap water into the vessel with mixer of high rotating speed and then add the product slowly while mixing. Continue mixing until the product is dissolved completely.
Effect
To meet the need for green environment protection, product MC specially developed for building material industry have properties like high water retention, good dispersing performance, small fineness, easy to mix and ready to dissolve, etc. This product are suitable for many new types of building materials like dry powder mortar, water-resistant putty powder (paste) for inner and outer walls, binder, seam filler, surfactant, water paint, auto-flow leveling agent, plaster, etc. Cellulose ether is an indispensable additive for cement and plaster-base building material. After the introduction of MC, the building material performances described hereafter could be improved:
A. Water retention---Improved water retention can protect cement and plaster against poor solidification and cracking due to too speedy drying and inefficient mixing with water.
B. Workability---Mortar plasticizing quality can be improved, which in turn will improve the workability of painting and working efficiency.
C. Binding---Due to the increased plasticizing quality, mortar can be a better binder.
D. Slipping-resistance---Due to the thickening action of Cellulose Ether, the slipping phenomena of mortar from substance to be bound can be prevented more efficiently.
Note
1. Highest viscosity shall be obtained by completely mixing or agitating both before and after the addition of the product.
2. Direct addition of the product with surface treatment into alkaline water solution will lead to the failure of the surface treatment, resulting in gel. Therefore, product with surface treatment can not be added into the alkaline water solution directly.
3. The concentration of the prepared solution shall be determined according to the product viscosity. The solution concentration of product with low viscosity (lower than 400mPa.s) is 10~15%, and the solution concentration of product with high viscosity (more than 30000mPa.s) is 2-3% at most.
Package & Transportation
The product is packed in polyethylene film bag enclosed in composite film bag. Net weight is 20 or 25 kg per bag. Protect the product against humidity and moisture. Storing with other chemicals is not allowed.
Information for application recommendation
1. The product can be utilized as water retaining agent and binder for plaster, plaster putty and binding filler, ceramic tile binder, cement mortar and wall surfactant.
2. Used in lacquer, the product is stable during storage and homogeneous in viscosity. Lacquer with this product can disperse evenly and meanwhile it will not be affected by pH value (suitable pH value range: 3-11). Its enzyme resistance can be different according to the degree of substitution. The enzyme resistance may be increased with increasing degree of substitution. The enzyme resistance may be increased with increasing degree of substitution. Meanwhile, the viscosity will no reduce or change due to the intrusion of enzyme as other thickeners do.
